The body’s nervous system works as a network of fibers and of nerve cells working together, to transmit nerve impulses, between the different pars of your body. It is comprised of neurons, working to transmit the messages from the brain, and to the spinal cord, to the many other areas and parts of your body.
Your nervous system is made up and broken down in to 2 parts: the peripheral and the central nervous system. Your spinal cord and brain are what makes up the central, and autonomic and the somatic nervous systems, make the peripheral system.
The central system is basically comprised of two major components which are: your brain and your spinal cord.
- Brain stem.
- Cerebellum; and, the Diencephalon.
The nerve cells are called neurons and the supporting cells are called gila.
Your spinal cord goes down to your lower spine, and it starts at the base of the brain. It is comprised of 31 segments , with a pair of spinal nerves coming out of each of these segments. Your motor and your sensory nerves are located, and controlled by the spinal cord.
What functions is your nervous system controlling & in charge of?
There are several functions that the system is in charge of. Depending on whether it is the brain or spinal cord reacting, depending on the things you are doing, and depending on the function that you are going to complete, different functions are going to be completed.
The main function that you can consider the nervous system being in charge of is fundamental function, which allows us to interact in our environment on a daily basis. The term “system” is used, since there are several layers, each a little more complex than the next. Some of the levels are:
- The mind (the highest level).
- Lower level functions include: your sensory system (vision, touch, smell, taste, hearing, and your balance).
- Your motor system and limb movements are also considered to be lower level functions (and controlled by the spinal cord); and,
- The nervous system also impacts some of our bodily functions, such as: hormone release, your blood circulation, respiration and digestion, are all controlled by, and interact in some way, form, or fashion, with your nervous system.
The functions that your body performs, are in part due to the electrical currents (signals) that are sent from your brain, and go down to your muscles and organs. These signals allow muscles to contract and retract, and allow your organs to properly function, without you actually having to sit down and think about how things function on a regular basis. In turn, the signals then transmit the motions you are making, your surroundings, and your local environment back to the brain, in order to tell the brain what is going on in and outside your body.
The nervous system basically what allows you to survive, thrive, interact, speak, walk, and do all of the simple and complex tasks you do on a daily basis, which you might take for-granted.
